SAINT JOHN'S PENNY BLACKS FEATURED ON SLOAN TRIBUTE ALBUM TO BE RELEASED NEXT WEEK; RECORDING DEBUT FULL-LENGTH ALBUM
"Take It In: A Tribute To Sloan" will be released officially on November 24 on Gooseberry Records, a distinctive indie label based in Ingersoll, Ontario. Gooseberry has released a series of uniquely East Coast tributes to the likes of Eric's Trip, Thrush Hermit, Murder Records and more. While the songs found on these albums may be strictly Maritime - penned, the participating artists paying tribute span the country. Saint John has the honour of being well-represented on this collection of takes on the seminal Halifax' band's catalogue - and no one could be more thrilled to have been asked than Jason Ogden and his Penny Blacks project.
Fortunate enough to have secured his single favorite Sloan song for the compilation, "Deeper Than Beauty", Ogden set to performing every instrument on the recording himself, save for the drums, which were provided by Penny Blacks' drummer Clinton Charlton. "I had originally planned to just flesh out a rough demo to take to the band and record it with everyone when we got into the studio to make our album," Ogden says, " But I kind of got carried away, sitting in a room full of instruments and recording gear. As it turns out, the full band wasn't going to get into the studio until after the deadline for the tribute, so I got Clinton to play some drums on what I had done, and sent it off."
The tribute, which spans 2 discs and features tracks from the likes of Jon McKiel, The Guthries, The Bright Lights, Glory Glory Man United and Adam Mowery, is available Tuesday, November 24 from Gooseberry via iTunes,
Zunior.com and Sonic Unyon.
