Making the Most of Conferences and Festival
With Waye Manson
CONFERENCE/CONFÉRENCE
Artists and industry workers are deluged with invitations to conferences and festivals. Aside from the music and good times, how do you get value for you and advance your career out of these events? Learn tricks and tips about how to maximise your conference investment and network like a pro.
Waye Mason’s love of independent Canadian music goes back over twenty years.
It was while volunteering at campus station CKDU-FM in 1990 that he first observed (sometimes) desperate and (often) floundering bands at close range. This triggered Waye’s natural paternal instincts. He started to organize shows and helping bands record, hosted a lo-fi music show. By 1993 he had started a label, distributor and management company, No Records.
Ten years later he became a Board member of Music Nova Scotia, the provincial industry association, and served as Treasurer, Vice President, and then President. He wrote and lobbied for the 2002 Music Sector Strategy, which lead to an unprecedented couple of million dollars multi year investment in music in Nova Scotia. In 2007, Music Nova Scotia hired him to write the 2007 revision of the Music Sector Strategy revision.
Over the years he has worked as business management consultant, with clients such as Ticketpro Canada, DRUM!, Gigantic Entertainment, and Debut Atlantic. He was the Executive Director of the Halifax Pop Explosion music festival from 2001 to 2010. Waye has been a member of the National Training Advisory Council for the music industry since 2007.
Today, Waye has a day job as an instructor at the Nova Scotia Community College, where he teaches Music Business and entrepreneurship. He writes about Halifax politics on his blog, Halifaxpolitics dot ca, and is a regular contributor on CBC Radio 1 & Rogers News 95.7, and has written for Openfile.ca and Halifax Magazine, and others.
