With an eye to launching an annual regional alternative music and art festival based in Saint John to run in August, we launched The Quality Block Party in April of this year. The festival ran concurrently with the East Coast Music Awards and we were able to showcase over sixty primarily New Brunswick artists, all presented in a two block radius in Saint John’s historic uptown area. We worked with the ECMA’s in presenting the event and the New Brunswick MIA MNB were one of our presenting sponsors, but primarily we worked with local and regional businesses and media outlets in presenting the five days of programming.

The Saint John Quality Block Party is a business entity owned and operated by Abigail Smith, Cole Savoie, Corey Bonnevie and Peter Rowan; Cole, Corey and Abigail have been active in the Saint John arts and music community for several years in a variety of capacities as artists and promoters; before moving to Saint John last year Peter has been working for 25 years as an arts professional and artist and events manager and was co-founder of The Halifax Pop Explosion and PopMontreal.

The Quality Block Party aims to represent on a large scale the year-round culture of music and art in Saint John. The city has undergone some dramatic changes over the last three years and we know that this is the strongest the music scene has been in a long time. Our project addresses the need of Saint John to demonstrate this by welcoming those from outside the city to witness what a supportive and creative place this is. The Quality Block Party is truly a destination festival akin to events like Sappyfest and the Halifax Pop Explosion, festivals that are intimately linked to their location.
