Biography

Robert Thomas is a noted Canadian songwriter, lyricist and composer. Over a career spanning 35 years (and counting), his work has been recognized by the Government of Canada, The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, The Canadian Television Network, NPR, The John Lennon Song Competition and the East Coast Music Association.

To date, Thomas’s songs have been published by Capitol Records, Epic/Sony Music, Matt Lindsay LLC Nashville, and Coldwater Music and have been considered by major recording artists including, Kenny Rogers, Joe Cocker, Sheena Easton, Dottie West, The Dixie Chicks and Roche Voisine. His instrumental scores have been used by CTV Sports, Skate Canada, The Nova Scotia Department of Tourism, Airstream, The Ford Motor Company and Air Canada.

As a performing songwriter, Thomas is a three time East Coast Music Awards nominee and has appeared or recorded across multiple genres with many of Canada’s most beloved A-list artists including, Barney Bentall, The Legendary Hearts, Spirit of the West, Garnet Rogers, Susan Aglukark, Roche Voisine, Ryan’s Fancy, Hagood Hardy, Ron Hynes and Lina Boudreau.

Thomas currently lives in New Brunswick, Canada with his two sons Selby and Noah and continues to write and record original songs for further publishing and touring with award winning multi-instrumentalist/Producer, Ray Legere and co-writers Selby Evans and Jolene Richard.  When not constrained by Covid, Thomas performs select engagements with his band, the sessionmen - Ray Legere – fiddle/mandolin/guitar/backing vocals, Jon Arsenault - guitar/backing vocals, and Maxime Forbes – keyboards/backing vocals. Collectively, the sessionmen are a musical force in their own right having played with the likes of Alison Krauss, Tony Rice, Doc Watson, Rita MacNeil, the Rankins, Natalie MacMaster, Michelle Shocked and The Chieftains.

From haunting ballads like “Plus Jamais La Mer” and “Twilight” to the hysterical commercial jingle portion of their show, to up-tempo toe tappers like “Heartbreak Highway” and “Jacksonville,” Robert Thomas and the sessionmen masterfully weave all original Roots/Americana songs into a highly entertaining musical biography of Robert’s long career as a published songwriter with Capital/EMI/Sony. Combining the story telling of Harry Chapin with the musicianship of Stan Rogers and the wry humour of John Prine, Robert Thomas and the sessionmen are one of the rare acts able move audiences to standing ovations at every stop. Don’t miss the chance to see one of truly Canada’s hidden gems.
