Penny & the Pits led the nominees during the 17th edition of the Prix MNB Awards, earning three wins, including the coveted Recording of the Year nod. Thomé Young, a veteran of the NB music scene, took home the Enregistrement de l’année. Young had previously won the first ever Music·Musique NB’s Enregistrement de l’année award, in 2010, with his album Adélaïde (released under the name Pascal Lejeune).
The New Brunswick music community celebrated the creativity and dedication of their fellow artists and industry professionals during the event hosted by @canada.gov.ca. The show featured performances by M3D14, Sylvie Boulianne (winner of the Chanson de l’année award), The Hello Crows, Umläb, Valérie Bouchard, and the night’s big winners, Penny and the Pits. Mi’kmaq elder Donna Augustine opened the ceremony and kicked off Semaine MNB Week, with prayer. In a surprise appearance, Lisa LeBlanc introduced her brand new single “Too Many Cooks”.
The Music·Musique NB’s board of directors also took the opportunity to pay tribute to Jean Surette, who stepped down as Executive Director last May, after 18 years with the association.
All in all, twelve awards were handed out in eleven categories, with the Shediac Lobster Festival and Paddlefest tying for the Festival of the Year award.
